Food is one of human beings’ favorite obsessions. Most people spend a great deal of time physically and mentally preoccupied with food: we organize and prepare meals, we daydream about what’s for lunch or dinner; we eat. Beyond simply an enjoyable, necessary human pastime, though, eating has important implications for how we think of ourselves, and how we relate to the larger culture.

September 21:
Choice Cuts: A Savory Selection of Food Writing from Around the World and Throughout History by Mark Kurlansky
Choice Cuts is a wide-ranging anthology of writing about food, spanning the ancients (Plato is represented here, discussing food as medicine) to the turn of the 21st century (Mimi Sheridan writes about bialys, Jewish onion rolls).

October 5 @ 7pm
Chocolat by Joanne Harris
Can indulgent food be a force for spiritual liberation, or is it inevitably an invitation to self-indulgent corruption? Snow Falling on Cedars. At that time, he gave a wonderfully educational presention about life in the camps for the Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Now, Dr. Sims is here to present Art in the Camps!

Japanese Americans imprisoned during World War II used art to help sustain their spirits during that time. Art was an important part of Japanese culture, infusing every aspect of life, and this was reflected in their activities during their imprisonment. Some of the art produced was documentary, depicting life and
events in the camp, and much was related to nature and the landscape of the camps. A number of outstanding artists contributed to this artistic record and their work is discussed and displayed through slides.

taken from the Idaho Humanities Council

join us wednesday, july 22 @ 7pm

Dr. Sims will also be working with the Children's library for two presentations on July 22 at 11am and 1pm... bring the whole family!

escape with us...

or should i say, "escape ON On a crisp summer morning in Soda Springs, Idaho, twenty-year-old Scott Dominguez kissed his fiance goodbye and went to work for Allan Elias, the owner of Evergreen Resources, an enterprise Dominguez thought was in the business of producing fertilizer from mining waste. A former high school wrestler blessed with Tom Cruise-like good looks, Dominguez seemed to have unlimited potential, but by eleven o'clock that morning he was fighting for his life, pulled unconscious from a cyanide-laced storage tank and not expected to live through the night. In Seattle, Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer of the Environmental Protection Agency was given the job of finding out what happened to Dominguez and why. Initially Hilldorfer did not want the case, still frustrated by an intense two-year investigation that concluded with corporate polluters walking out of a federal courthouse free. But as he learned more, Hilldorfer, the son of a Pittsburgh cop with a blue-collar work ethic, was touched by Scott's suffering and outraged at Elias's callous disregard for his employees' well-being. Hilldorfer and his partner, Special Agent Bob Wojnicz, joined forces with seasoned Boise Assistant U.S. Attorney George Breitsameter and an indefatigable, brilliant young attorney from the Department of Justice's Environmental Crimes Section named David Uhlmann. Together they would uncover the horrifying truths and build the criminal case against Elias. A former New York whiz kid and Arizona realestate and business mogul, Elias owned businesses that had polluted Idaho with hazardous waste for nearly a decade. Yet Elias never spent a single day in jail, openly boasted of beating the environmental quality regulations, and avoided any significant fines. Would this case be any different?

2003 Winner
Traplines: coming home to Sawtooth Valley by John Rember, Pantheon Books
In 1987, John Rember returned home to Sawtooth Valley, where he had been brought up. He returned out of a homing instinct: the same forty acres that had sustained his family's horses had sustained a vision of a place where he belonged in the world, a life where he could get up in the morning, step out the door, and catch dinner from the Salmon River. But to his surprise, he found that what was once familiar was now unfamiliar. Everything might have looked the same to the horses that spring, but to Rember this was no longer home.

2002 Winner
The Secrets of the Magic Valley and Hagerman's Remarkable Horse, edited by Todd Shallat, Black Canyon Communications
In Idaho's Magic Valley, water transformed a desert into a significant agricultural region. Whether beholding the Northern Lights, or staring into a high meadow where the dark shape of a bear "lumbers through patches of late melting snow", Johnson pledges his allegiance to the indescribable joy we find in creation. He uses the most homely objects in his poems — a worn out pair of work boots, a collapsed barn — to embody the past and unite it with the present. Incorporating Indian perspectives, Montana: Stories of the Land is the first truly multicultural history of the state. It features hundreds of historical photographs, unique artifacts, maps, and paintings largely drawn from the Society's extensive collections. Sidebar quotations bring the stories of ordinary people to life while providing diverse perspectives on important historical events.

REQUIEM FOR LOCUSTS by Wendy Parciak

This is the story of how people react when confronted by someone whose life is more out of control than their own. This book is especially poignant for the southern Idaho region, as it deals with haunting issues of prejudice towards the Japanese Americans during World War II.

from the publisher:

San Piedro Island, north of Puget Sound, is a place so isolated that no one who lives there can afford to make enemies. But in 1954 a local fisherman is found suspiciously drowned, and a Japanese American named Kabuo Miyamoto is charged with his murder. In the course of the ensuing trial, it becomes clear that what is at stake is more than a man's guilt. For on San Pedro, memory grows as thickly as cedar trees and the fields of ripe strawberries — memories of a charmed love affair between a white boy and the Japanese girl who grew up to become Kabuo's wife; memories of land desired, paid for, and lost. Above all, San Piedro is haunted by the memory of what happened to its Japanese residents during World War II, when an entire community was sent into exile while its neighbors watched. Gripping, tragic, and densely atmospheric, Snow Falling on Cedars is a masterpiece of suspense — one that leaves us shaken and changed.

Snow Falling on Cedars:
· Winner of the 1995 PEN/Faulkner Award
· American Booksellers Association Book of the Year Award
· Pacific Northwest Bookseller Association Award

Other people said:
· "Compelling...heartstopping. Finely wrought, flawlessly written." The New York Times Book Review
· "[A] thoughtful, poetic first novel, a cleverly constructed courtroom drama with detailed, compelling characters....Packed with lovely moments and as compact as haiku — at the same time, a page-turner full of twists." Kirkus Reviews
· "A powerful meditation on the nature of pride and prejudice and personal responsibility....Casts a deepening spell." Seattle Post Intelligencer
· "The novel poetically evokes the beauty of the land while revealing the harshness of war, the nuances of our legal system, and the injustice done to those interned in U.S. relocation camps. Highly recommended." of family and friends during the Christmas season, we don't seem to notice the the snow and cold. there are all of those FUN things to look forward to...

... and then we're faced to deal with the reality of winter! well, i think i have a bandaid cure for the bleakness of winter--reading a good book!

TIKI! TIKI! TIKI! also known as the IFPL winter reading program is still running strong, and you have until February 28 to read and win prizes! and i have been hearing that people are wandering over into the 800 section and finding really good stuff--stuff they might never have found without being encouraged. for example, did you know that Isaac Asimov wrote about his favorite jokes? you can read all of them in Isaac Asimov's Treasury of Humor. or did you know that the illustrated Ten Great Plays (by Shakespeare) is the most popular--according to circulation stats--book in the 800 section? or did you know that there is a book full of poems and stories about baseball? Baseball: a literary anthology is here and hiding out in the 800s! stroll over there and browse the shelves...

just so you know, the libraries (Idaho Falls and Iona) will be closed on January 19 for Human Rights Day. please plan ahead.

on to other things... Open Mic Night is on January 20 @ 7pm and we're going to focus on books we read in 2008--either books we LOVED or those we really didn't. please come and give us a little synopsis about your book, to talk about your feelings about the book, and maybe be prepared to defend your stance.

it should be a fun night!

and like i said before, we are all feeling that winter is here... please, please plan ahead on your borrowing. we can usually renew a book/magazine/audio book (as long as no one has requested the item), but there is no way we can renew DVD or VHS items.

keep that in mind while taking those items home.

Idaho Falls Reads... is just around the corner. this is a major event for us at the library, and we think that your input would help us make this program even better! contact me (jennifferh@ifpl.org / 612-8330) if you have suggestions or comments. thanks!

see you in the library!

you missed it!

the attendance was spare, but the Christmas spirit was strong!!

at our first Open Mic Night, we welcomed two readers who both shared Christmas stories:
Brent read us the tale of Stubby Pringle written by Jack Schaefer (of Shane fame)...

Stubby Pringle, spurs a jingle, jobs upslope through crusted snow. The roan, warmed through, moves strong and steady under him.
