IFPL is now offering downloadable ebooks and audio books!!

it's very easy, all you need is...

go to our website

click on the download icon

at your first visit, learn everything you need to know by visiting the links in the Getting Started area on the right-side of the screen

once this is done, you're ready to pick your books!

start by logging-in now by clicking on the My Account tab
enter all 14 numbers of your IFPL library card
choose a collection from the Browse Collection on the left-side of the screen

you will have to chose the appropriate format (i.e., Kindle Book, etc...)
click on the download button
now depending on the device you have, follow the instructions listed in Getting Started menu
enjoy your newly downloaded book!!

what a summer!!

we had record breaking summer reading programs--the summer was full of speakers, events and reading... lots and lots of reading for kids, teens and adults.

thank you all for making our summer busy and successful! we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

but now that school has started and we've slowed down a bit in the library, we've still got fun things up our sleeves. be sure to visit the children's page and the teen page for upcoming events.

as we speak, we're taking nominations for the new 2012 Book Club in a Box collection until october 15, and voting for the top 12 titles will begin shortly thereafter. the sets will be available january 3, 2012!! want more information about that, visit the book club page.

also, are you ever at a loss for what to read next? take a second to check-out our what to read page because it offers some fun stuff to read--sometimes along a theme, sometimes very random.

on tuesday night, the library was thoroughly entertained with stories, poems and a beautiful photo tour of u.s. highway 20 from michael czarnecki.

those who were present at the event raved about the presentation... we thank michael for visiting us, and hope to see him on his next trip to the west.

Michael Czarnecki

is a poet and oral memoirist who first traveled the highway for twenty days in 1996. And he's doing it again--with a stop at the Idaho Falls Public Library to share photos, stories, poems and prose of his experiences.

US 20 is the longest United States highway. It connects the two coasts, crosses the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers and takes you to Yellowstone National Park! Cities, small towns, rolling hills, eastern woodlands and farms, western plains, wild west landscapes. What more could one want in a single route, a route that today is garnering much interest in its historic significance.

YAY!!! oh, and yeah... half of the schools in town are now on summer vacation... which also explains why the parking lot was so full, too!

In the Autumn of 1996 Michael traveled 20 days on America’s longest road and wrote a book about his adventures, “Twenty Days on Route 20.” Now, 14 years later, he is once again driving the length of US 20, this time in spring.

patrons must have their OWN idaho falls public library card to check out anything from the library--you cannot check out using someone else's card!
patrons can check out up to 50 items at once--and that can be any combination of movies, books, magazines and/or audio books
most items check out for a 3 week period*--there isn't a grace period and fines will start accruing at $0.25 a day per item
almost all books can be renewed, as long as no one has it on request
all movies check out for one week--and no renewals

one reading program has ended, and here we go gearing up for the next great program at IFPL!!

the adult winter reading program begins on december 21!!

remember how much fun we had with beach blanket bingo a couple of years ago? that was the program that we challenged you to read books from different genres, authors from different backgrounds and award winning books... well, we're laying down a new challenge this year!

we're busily making author and setting lists, as this year we are encouraging you to read books by authors of other cultures and books set in places other than IDAHO!

this is how it works:

· Read (or listen to) books from an author from another culture, or books set in places other than Idaho

· Track your travels in your passport (*what have you read? And what did you think?)

· Come into the library with your passport, and have the librarian stamp your completed passport pages

· When you have “visited”:

*two destinations (i.e., read two books), you will get two “travel vouchers” to enter yourself into the drawing for the surprise grand prize

*five destinations, you will receive a mug and travel vouchers for the books you’ve read

*nine destinations, you will receive a book bag and even more travel vouchers!

If you decide to read more than nine books, you will receive more vouchers—no other prizes

At the end of the program, we will draw the winner of the surprise grand prize!!

*Please remember that books need to be written by authors that are from other cultures and books with settings that are in regions countries other than Idaho

*The program runs thru December 21 thru March 20, 2010—no late entries will be accepted!

Climbing the Mango Trees by Madhur Jaffrey
Climbing the Mango Tree is a delightful memoir of the author’s childhood in mid-twentieth-century Delhi, India. Madhur Jaffrey’s wealthy family lived in an extended-family compound, and her life was rich in cousins, aunts, and uncles.

we have a limited amount of sets of these books. so if you're interested in joining this group, let me know or be here on the 11th of september to check your set out.

You may remember that Dr Sims was here last spring in conjunction with Idaho Falls Reads... Snow Falling on Cedars. At that time, he gave a wonderfully educational presention about life in the camps for the Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Now, Dr. Sims is here to present Art in the Camps!

Japanese Americans imprisoned during World War II used art to help sustain their spirits during that time. Art was an important part of Japanese culture, infusing every aspect of life, and this was reflected in their activities during their imprisonment. Some of the art produced was documentary, depicting life and
events in the camp, and much was related to nature and the landscape of the camps. A number of outstanding artists contributed to this artistic record and their work is discussed and displayed through slides.
